Paris Saint-Germain advanced to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals after defeating Liverpool 4-1 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 aggregate draw Tuesday night at Anfield.

Although it was a tightly contested tie with the margin for error being slim, PSG manager Luis Enrique explained that the squad displayed two key traits that allowed them to advance, especially in the penalty kick shootout.

For the opening goal, PSG took the lead in the 12th minute when Nuno Mendes found Ousmane Dembele in the middle. Dembele quickly played the ball to Bradley Barcola on the right, and a deflection off Ibrahima Konate’s sliding tackle set up Dembele for a simple finish.

Neither team could break the deadlock in extra time, sending the match to penalties. PSG converted all four attempts against Alisson Becker, while Gianluigi Donnarumma stepped up in goal.

After conceding a penalty to Mohamed Salah, Donnarumma responded with crucial saves against Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones. Desire Doue calmly buried the final spot-kick to seal PSG’s place in the next round.

Following the win on penalties to advance past the English side, manager Luis Enrique wanted to spotlight two traits he saw from his club over the 90 minutes and in the penalty kick shootout.

“They play better than us here, but I think my team at Anfield, in a special stadium showed great personality and character,” Enrique said speaking to Amazon Prime.  “We tried to play our best, but it was difficult as they’re so intense.

“Both teams deserve to qualify. The character and personality, even when we shoot at the penalty shootout they showed great character. I think it shows clearly the team we are.

PSG will now face either Aston Villa or Club Brugge in the quarterfinals. Currently, the English side have a 3-1 aggregate lead heading into the second leg at Villa Park.
