Luis Enrique joined an exclusive list of coaches to have won the Champions League on three occasions after beating Arsenal on penalties in Saturday night’s final, but the PSG coach took a moment out of his celebrations to thank one of his teachers and friends from Roma: ‘I have to thank my dear friend Claudio’.
Penalties were required to settle the Champions League final for the first time in a decade on Saturday evening. Kai Havertz opened the scoring early in the first half, Ousmane Dembele levelled from the spot in the second, but misses from Ebere Eze and Gabriel Magalhaes in the shoot-out saw PSG take home the trophy for the second year in a row.
Carlo Ancelotti remains the most successful coach in the history of the Champions League and European Cup with five wins, but Enrique is now one of a select few to have won the trophy on three occasions, along with Pep Guardiola, Zinedine Zidane and Bob Paisley.
Speaking with Sky after full-time in Budapest on Saturday evening, Enrique decided to take a moment to dedicate PSG’s win to his former Roma colleague Claudio Bisceglia.
“I have to thank my dear friend Claudio Bisceglia, a Roma player and teacher, a true friend,” Enrique said.

Bisceglia is a language teacher and interpreter who is still employed by Roma and was also thanked by Enrique when he won his first Champions League title with Barcelona back in 2015.
Bisceglia is said to have been fundamental in talks between current Roma head coach Gian Piero Gasperini and the English-speaking club owners, the Friedkins. Jose Mourinho also referred to Bisceglia as a ‘phenomenon’ during his time at the Stadio Olimpico.
