Luis García Plaza has taken charge at Sevilla, leading his first session ahead of the trip to Real Oviedo’s Carlos Tartiere. With nine games left and the side only three points above the drop, his immediate focus is tightening a defence that has shipped 49 goals, the worst record in the division.

Marca states that his backroom team will feature assistant Pedro Rostoll Menoti, fitness lead Félix Vicente, plus Christian Moya and psychologist Emilio Ibáñez, with club coaches Javi Martínez and Arturo González also involved.

The new coach began amid international absences, with eight players away, including Nyland, Gudelj and Rubén Vargas. He is due to have the full group only by next Holy Wednesday.

César Azpilicueta worked individually in the gym, while Marcao and Peque remain sidelined. Academy prospects Ibra Sow and Espiñeira were drafted in to bolster numbers.

At his unveiling, García Plaza said he wants the team to connect with and lift the supporters, and stressed he views the challenge with pride rather than as a burden. He has signed until June 2027, one year longer than first anticipated, after a two-and-a-half year spell in Vitoria.

Tactically, he is likely to favour a 4-2-3-1 that could suit Ejuke, Peque and Isaac Romero when available. His familiarity with Joan Jordán from Alavés may help, while Kike Salas is emerging as the leader of the back line and Gudelj could be used in midfield. The final set-up may hinge on the lack of a natural number 10, but the aim is a more resilient unit.
