Luis García Plaza is set to take charge of Sevilla after Matías Almeyda’s exit, with nine games left to preserve their LaLiga status. Almeyda departed in the wake of the damaging defeat to Valencia.
He leaves with a league record of eight wins, 14 draws and seven defeats, with the team 15th. Internal pressure made his dismissal inevitable after he suggested it would take a miracle to win again. Sevilla sit three points from danger.
Since Julen Lopetegui left in 2021/22, seven coaches have failed to complete a season, among them Sampaoli, Mendilibar, Diego Alonso, Quique Sánchez Flores, García Pimienta and Caparrós, now joined by Almeyda. The churn underlines a club struggling to settle on a project.
El Desmarque reports that an emergency shortlist featured Diego Martínez, Manolo Jiménez and Luis García Plaza, while Diario de Sevilla also named that trio. Zona Mixta says the club contacted Javi Calleja, who came close to taking the job before the final call.
Luis García Plaza will lead the run-in, with ABC de Sevilla stating he will sign to the end of the season with an option for a further year if they stay up. He is due to land in Seville on Tuesday to complete the deal and take charge on Wednesday morning.
The immediate task is to use the international break to reset before facing Real Oviedo. Sevilla hope to close out safety quickly and draw a line under a turbulent spell.
