A familiar voice on Flamengo matches for Globo, Luis Roberto has been diagnosed with a cervical neoplasia and will undergo treatment, stepping away from broadcasts for an indefinite period, including the World Cup.

According to Coluna Do Fla, he commentated Flamengo's 3-1 win over Santos at the Maracanã on Sunday in the Brasileirão. He will not handle the Copa Libertadores Group A opener against Cusco in Peru, which starts at 21:30 Brasília time, with Everaldo Marques on commentary.

He said that after the initial scare everything is under control and he is supported by leading doctors and hospitals, as well as by a loving family. With almost 40 years at Globo, he feels fully backed by colleagues.

He acknowledged that being away during a period that includes the World Cup is a major challenge, but said the bigger task is overcoming this stage. His focus is on recovery and he hopes, with faith in God and science, to return to normal life soon. He thanked fans for their support.

Roberto has commentated many landmark Flamengo triumphs on Globo, including the Libertadores titles in 2019 and 2025, as well as Brazilian league and cup successes and numerous state championships.
