Luis Suarez has left the door open to an Uruguay recall for the World Cup, saying he could reconsider international retirement if called. A comeback would arrive more than 19 months after his last cap.

"I will never say no to the national team if it needs me, especially with a World Cup coming," he said, according to EFE. "At the time, I made room for the younger generation. I said something I should not have said. I have already apologised to those I owed an apology to."

Suarez, now 39, stepped away in September 2024 as Uruguay’s record scorer with 69 goals in 143 appearances. His farewell was clouded by criticism of Marcelo Bielsa’s management, which he said had divided the dressing room.

Now with Inter Miami in MLS, he says the competitive fire remains. He still gets angry after defeats or a poor pass, and takes the same pleasure in scoring.

Suarez has featured at four World Cups for Uruguay and was part of the Copa America-winning side in 2011.
