The Seattle Sounders defeated Inter Miami 3–0 in the 2025 Leagues Cup final, winning their ninth major trophy since joining the league. The victory was an additional accomplishment in Seattle's proud history, but the celebrations were marred by a stressful post-game exchange involving Inter Miami forward Luis Suárez.
Tensions erupted after the final whistle. Suárez was in a headlock by Seattle's Obed Vargas, and the situation quickly escalated into a bigger mess with players and officials from both teams.
Some Reports say Sergio Busquets hit Vargas and Maxi Falcon bumped Seattle’s Cody Baker.
A very disturbing event emerged during the chaos. A video on social media appeared to show Suárez spitting at someone from Seattle's staff, reportedly the club's director of security, Gene Ramirez.
Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari tried to calm things down.
In his post-match interview, Seattle coach Brian Schmetzer said he felt bad the incident took away from his team’s great performance because it shouldn’t have been such a big deal.
Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said he didn’t see the whole thing and that there may have been some provocation.
The incident will be reviewed by the Leagues Cup Organizing Committee and MLS will get involved if necessary.
Luis Suárez’s behavior in the 2025 Leagues Cup final was just the latest in a long list of controversies in his career. He’s been banned for biting players twice before: once in the Netherlands in 2010, once in England and again in the 2014 World Cup. He got a long ban in 2011 for racially abusing Patrice Evra and has faced a ton of criticism for his violence.
Suárez's contract with Miami runs through the end of 2025 but his future is in doubt. He has made statements that he wants to finish his career playing alongside Lionel Messi, though with recent incidents Miami may be reconsidering (as they should) Suárez's future.
