Luisão says he has faced online abuse from Benfica supporters after speaking out over the controversy involving Gianluca Prestianni and Vinicius Jr. According to Glorioso 1904, the former captain made the complaint one day after criticising the club’s stance on the incident.
He wrote on social media that messages targeted him for showing solidarity with his compatriot, including being called a monkey and Judas, and being told he should not return to the stadium.
He stressed that Benfica’s shirt is like a second skin to him, yet said he was hurt by attacks from fellow supporters. He also accused the club of lying.
Lamenting the episode, he said that even when people take a position on something he regards as extremely serious, they are punished. He added that he considers Vinicius Jr a hero and a reference in the fight against racism.
He concluded that the abuse hurts and leaves him feeling powerless. He expressed hope that Europe, given its status, will also set the standard in opposing racism.
