Flamengo won the Carioca on Sunday, beating Fluminense on penalties, and Luiz Araújo used the moment to address critics.
According to Coluna Do Fla, the winger said people talked about relegation in the Carioca and many had Fluminense as favourites. He added that Flamengo work rather than talk, and that they are now three-time champions.
Flamengo had flirted with the relegation quadrangular, only sealing a knockout place on the final round. They beat Botafogo 2-1 in the quarter-finals, then thrashed Madureira 11-0 in the semi-finals.
In the shootout, Jorginho converted Flamengo’s first penalty. Araújo took the second but Fábio saved, putting Flamengo behind.
Agustín Rossi then saved from Guga and Otávio, securing the title for Flamengo.
With Araújo available, Flamengo now switch focus to the Brasileirão. Leonardo Jardim’s side face Cruzeiro at the Maracanã on Wednesday 11 at 21:30 Brasília time.
