Luke Ayling has signed a new one-year contract at Middlesbrough, keeping the 34-year-old at the Championship club until 2027. The right-back’s extension follows a busy campaign.
The club said in a statement that he has been a mainstay since arriving from Elland Road, operating at right-back and centre-back, and captaining at times. It added that he has made 66 appearances for Boro and is hoping for another crack at the Premier League in a red shirt.
Ayling ended eight years with Leeds in 2024 when he joined Middlesbrough on loan in January until the end of the season. He completed a permanent move in the summer.
He made 28 appearances in 2024-25 as Boro finished 10th. This season he has already featured 38 times, helping Boro climb to second in the table.
For Ayling, last season was not great, he wanted to show he could still play at this level, and he has enjoyed this campaign. He views the final seven games as a chance to help get the club back where it should be, with the fans having a major role and a desire to make those matches special.
