Lutsharel Geertruida has confirmed he will not return to Sunderland this season, issuing a 92-word message to supporters. The player said in a post that his loan spell is something he will always be proud of.

Sunderland chose not to activate their option to buy earlier this summer. Talks continued with the RB Leipzig loanee, but the club instead signed free agent Thomas Meunier on a two-year deal.

Meunier’s arrival was widely viewed as the end of Sunderland’s pursuit of Geertruida. The 26-year-old has now drawn a line under the possibility of a comeback.

His message thanked team-mates, staff and fans for their backing, and noted he enjoyed every moment on and off the pitch. It highlighted pride in making his Premier League debut at the club and wished Sunderland the very best.

Geertruida made 30 appearances across all competitions last season. Although not always a regular starter, he played a key role in the strong finish that secured Europa League football next season.
