Madrid erupts as champions return: Paredes vs Gavi sign, Yamal’s brother, Ferran Torres’s ‘Make Spain Great Again’ cap | OneFootball

Spain’s World Cup winners were welcomed in Madrid on Monday after their 1-0 victory over Argentina after extra time in New York.

According to L'Équipe, they landed from the United States around 14:30, medals on, stepping off behind head coach Luis de la Fuente and captain Rodri for the traditional trophy photo.

After lunch in a city-centre hotel, the squad visited the Zarzuela Palace where King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia and Princesses Leonor and Sofia welcomed them in La Roja shirts.

A bus parade followed through packed streets as more than a million lined the route to Plaza de Cibeles, slogans for the world champions on the coach.

One handmade placard billed Paredes vs Gavi as the fight of the year VII. Hoisted by Fabian Ruiz, it drew laughs, especially from Lamine Yamal who seemed to enjoy the idea.

Its reverse showed Keyne, Yamal’s younger brother, in a Christ-like pose, a social media favourite for his reactions, which amused the Barça forward and his team-mates.

Ferran Torres, man of the match and scorer of the final’s only goal, said at Moncloa they had been on cloud nine since leaving New York. He later wore a red cap reading “Make Spain Great Again”, a nod to Donald Trump, with whom the players lifted the trophy on Sunday.

Festivities ended at Cibeles with a concert, secured by 2,050 police and 400 Civil Guard personnel. A number of Spanish artists joined the players on stage late into the night.
