FSV Mainz 05 loanee Stefan Posch has endured a difficult start to the 2026 World Cup, suffering an untimely broken jaw.

Following a CT scan after the injury sustained during their 3-1 win over Jordan, it was deemed that surgery would not be necessary.

Posch's diagnosis is more encouraging than initially feared after coach Ralf Rangnick said it could potentially end his tournament.

The absence of a surgical requirement gives Austria hope that their Mainz defender could return sooner than expected.

A specially designed mouth guard is being manufactured for the 29-year-old to protect and support the healing process.

His availability for Austria's next Group J fixture against Argentina will depend on how quickly the mouth guard can be produced.
