VfL Wolfsburg will be without new summer signing Timon Wellenreuther for several weeks after the goalkeeper sustained a knee injury during Friday's pre-season friendly against Olympique Lyon.

The 30-year-old picked up the injury in Wolfsburg's 2-0 defeat and has since undergone medical examinations, which confirmed that an operation will not be necessary. Nevertheless, the club expects the former Feyenoord captain to be sidelined for several weeks.

The setback comes at an unfortunate time for both player and club. Wellenreuther only completed his move from Feyenoord Rotterdam around two weeks ago, returning to German football after a nine-year spell abroad. The experienced shot-stopper signed a contract until 2029 and had been brought in to become Wolfsburg's new first-choice goalkeeper.

Wolfsburg have undergone significant changes between the posts this summer. Marius Müller has already departed for Aberdeen, while former No. 1 Kamil Grabara is also expected to leave the club, making Wellenreuther's arrival a key part of the club's rebuild.
