After seeing two bids rejected by Everton at the beginning of the window, Manchester United shelved their interest in Jarrad Branthwaite in hopes of potentially returning later down the line.

However, the Reds may not be granted such a free run at Branthwaite if they revive their pursuit next summer. Both Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof’s contracts run out in June 2025, so defensive reinforcements will be crucial the same way they were this year.

A new report from The Guardian’s rumour round-up claims that Liverpool are plotting a surprise late swoop to try and tempt Branthwaite into becoming one of only a handful of players to cross the park.

Yet to make a signing this summer, the Anfield outfit would be willing to offer £63 million plus £7m in add-ons to secure the signature of the ‘absolute monster’ centre-half, who is likely viewed as an ideal candidate to become Virgil van Dijk’s long-term successor.

It remains to be seen if the Toffees would sanction a sale to their fiercest rivals, especially for their most valuable – and perhaps most integral – asset. Yet, their precarious financial situation, which worsened upon the collapse of their mooted takeover, could see them eventually forced to part ways with Branthwaite.

The 22-year-old earned his first England cap back in June and already boasts a remarkable 100+ professional matches under his belt.
