Luton defender Mads Andersen has been linked with a summer switch to Malmo.
Luton Town defender Mads Andersen has been linked with a summer move to Swedish giants Malmö, as the Hatters prepare to make cuts to the squad following relegation to League One.
Luton became only the fourth side in the modern era to suffer back-to-back relegations from the Premier League down to League One, with a 5-3 defeat to West Brom on the final day condemning them to third tier football next season.
Despite having a squad on paper that should have been well-equipped enough to challenge towards the upper ends of the division, Luton’s failings in the Premier League transitioned into their Championship season, which unraveled under a combination of Rob Edwards and Matt Bloomfield.
The latter did provide the Hatters with a boost before their clash at The Hawthorns with three straight victories, but Bloomfield will now be tasked with delivering an immediate promotion, possessing previous third tier experience from his time with Wycombe Wanderers.
But before a ball is kicked, Luton are set to conduct major surgery to their squad, with a number of high earners expected to depart to give the club a competitive budget so they can aim for the automatic promotion places.
One senior figure who could leave is defender Mads Andersen, who has struggled for first-team minutes since his move from Barnsley back in 2023.
According to AftonBladet, Luton Town defender Mads Andersen is on the radar of Swedish outfit Malmö, who are considering swooping in for the 27-year-old.
Andersen, who has only played 19 times for the Hatters, is looking to put a dark period in his career behind him, but while he is on Malmö’s shortlist, the club are yet to contact Luton over a transfer.
Andersen is free to exit from Luton, and the report suggests that a move there will earn him more game time and allow him to compete for trophies.
The towering 6ft 4in defender does have experience playing in Scandinavia from his time in Denmark with Horsens and Brondby, so a move to Sweden looks an appealing option from his perspective.
It is unknown whether Luton will make any money from the sale at this stage, given there has been no confirmation about the length of his contract since he moved to Kenilworth Road.
It’s safe to say Luton Town require a complete rebuild after a disastrous two seasons.
Relegation to League One at the start of the Championship campaign seemed unthinkable, but the Hatters now need a set of players who are up the fight of a League One slog and want to drag the club back into a forward direction.
Luton could make a profit from Mads Andersen’s sale, and it makes sense to sign off a move like that, given he’s clearly unhappy about a lack of action under both Rob Edwards and Matt Bloomfield.
Figures with Premier League experience like Carlton Morris and Alfie Doughty should be immediate targets to offload too, with Luton set to dominate the League One spending budget should those types of players depart.
Luton are sure to wave goodbye to a lot of first-team players over the course of this summer, but it simply has to be done if they are to have the best possible chance of making an immediate return to the Championship.
