Manchester claimed a 3-1 victory over Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday evening, advancing to the final 5-1 on aggregate.

Omar Marmoush opened the scoring in the seventh minute, with the Egyptian racing in behind before Dan Burn’s attempted clearance deflected off him and into the net.

Newcastle almost got an immediate response when Nick Woltemade picked out Joe Willock, but James Trafford came off his line to avert the danger.

Anthony Gordon squandered another big chance for the visitors after being put through one-on-one, but Trafford made a superb save to deny him.

City doubled their lead in the 28th minute, as Antoine Semenyo’s cross was cleared into Marmoush, who had a simple task to head into an empty net.

Three minutes later, City added to their tally. Burn’s last-ditch tackle on Semenyo only diverted the ball into the path of Tijjani Reijnders, who kept his composure to finish.

Two minutes into the second period, Yoanne Wissa was played in behind by Sandro Tonali, but the Congolese striker fluffed his lines.

Antony Elanga pulled one back for Newcastle just after the hour mark, with the substitute deftly driving into the area before picking out the far corner.

Harvey Barnes saw a goal ruled offside in the 68th minute as the Magpies pushed to reduce the deficit.

Shortly after, Elanga could not believe he had not scored, side-footing Barnes low cross beyond the face of goal from close range.

Erling Haaland was denied twice late on by Aaron Ramsdale as the hosts finished the game the brighter side.

The Cityzens have now reached the Carabao Cup final for the 10th time. They will face Arsenal on March 22, a repeat of the 2017/18 final where City triumphed 3-0.
