As one player picks up a new injury, others are nearing returns

Manchester City have reason to be hopeful that their injury concerns ease over the international break, though Rodri appears to have picked up fresh fitness concern.

The influential midfielder continues to build up his fitness after a serious knee injury, and remains unable to play regular 90-minute matches. After starting against Monaco in midweek, he faced Brentford from the off on Sunday and lasted just 22 minutes.

There was better news on Rayan Cherki, who appears ready to return ahead of schedule, while Rayan Ait-Nouri, Omar Marmoush and Abdukodir Khusanov are potentially not too far off being available for selection.

Rodri

It’s been a tough road to recovery for Rodri, who now faces another spell on the sidelines.

Rodri started against Monaco in midweek and, four days later, line up against Brentford, but only lasted just 22 minutes before pulling up with a muscle injury.

Guardiola has spoken in recent weeks how Rodri’s fitness was being managed, and he is still not ready to start multiple games in a row, and emphasised that point after the game.

“Everyone was wondering why I substituted Rodri against Monaco, and today everyone understood why,” Guardiola told reporters.

“I don’t know how long he will be out; we are waiting for the tests.”

Potential return date: Unknown

Rayan Cherki

Rayan Cherki was a surprise inclusion in City’s matchday squad at Brentford, involved around one month ahead of schedule.

The £30m summer signing made just two competitive appearances - scoring on his debut - before being sidelined with a thigh injury.

At the same, Guardiola claimed Cherki would be out “for two months, seven or eight weeks”, but the France international was on the bench at the Gtech Community Stadium.

He did not come on, but is firmly in contention to play after the international break.

Rayan Ait-Nouri

Ait-Nouri has been sidelined since the 2-0 home loss to Manchester City in August, and has now missed eight games with an ankle injury.

It was hoped that the summer signing would return after the international break. But the fact he was not included in the latest Algeria squad suggests he remains not yet ready for first-team action.

Omar Marmoush

Forward Omar Marmoush was expected to return this week from a knee ligament injury picked up while representing Egypt against Burkina Faso last month.

The initial prognosis from Guardiola at the time was for Marmoush to return “before the next international break”, but that timeline has now expired and Marmoush is set to be seen.

It remains unclear if Marmoush’s rehabilitation is going slower than expected, or if the player has suffered a setback.

Abdukodir Khusanov

Abdukodir Khusanov is another whose return has been delayed.

The centre-back was forced off at half-time of the 1-1 draw with Arsenal, with Guardiola subsequently ruling him out of “the next three games.”

The win at Brentford was the third of those three games, and Khusanov was again absent from the squad. He now has a little under two weeks to build up his fitness.
