Nottingham Forest are bracing for a club-record departure, with Manchester City lining up a second bid for Elliot Anderson.
City are prepared to pay in excess of £80m for the England midfielder, talkSPORT reports, after seeing an opening approach rebuffed.
Forest, strengthened financially and in no mood to sell cheaply, value Anderson north of £100m — a figure they believe should top the £105m Arsenal paid for Declan Rice in 2023.
Any fee would comfortably eclipse the £55m Newcastle gave Forest for Anthony Elanga last summer, making Anderson the club’s record sale by some distance.
The 23-year-old’s preference looks settled. He favours the Etihad and has broadly agreed personal terms.
He also wants his future resolved before England open their World Cup against Croatia on 17 June.
For now, Anderson is in Florida with Thomas Tuchel’s squad, his club situation the one loose end of his summer.
Manchester United have not walked away, though they accept City lead the race. They will not enter a bidding war, so their focus has shifted to alternatives.
United have agreed a deal for Atalanta’s Éderson and still want two central midfielders.
They admire West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba.
For City, the move signals intent during a summer of change. Bernardo Silva has gone, Rodri’s future carries doubt amid Real Madrid interest, and the midfield needs fresh legs.
Tellingly, City will sign Anderson regardless of whether Rodri stays. They hold the advantage and Anderson is willing.
Forest’s asking price remains the one obstacle. Whether City meet it, or blink, will decide one of the window’s defining transfers.
