Manchester City’s stoppage-time win at Anfield breathed life into a race Arsenal still lead, while Cristian Romero’s captaincy and deep crossing drew scrutiny.
According to NY Times, Liverpool led 1-0 with less than 10 minutes left after Dominik Szoboszlai’s free kick. Bernardo Silva levelled from Erling Haaland’s knockdown, then Alisson fouled Matheus Nunes and Haaland converted the stoppage-time penalty.
Silva played like a man possessed and later said the squad felt defeat would probably have ended the contest at the top. Arsenal remain six points clear with 13 games to go and only a trip to Manchester City left among the top six.
City can cut the gap to three by beating Fulham on Wednesday. Fulham have lost their past 18 meetings with City in all competitions, the longest such run between two English clubs.
At Tottenham, Romero was named captain in August, part of a modern shift towards leadership groups. He now faces a four-match ban, his third suspension this season, with Spurs winless in seven in the league and six points above the drop.
Saturday also hinted at the return of the same-side cross. Brentford’s Vitaly Janelt, West Ham’s Valentin Castellanos and Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes scored from deliveries swung in early, with Brentford’s Dango Ouattara and West Ham’s El Hadji Malick Diouf producing especially inviting balls.
