Manchester City have moved into the top eight of the Champions League as they prepare to host Borussia Dortmund at the Etihad on Wednesday November 5.

The Citizens have beaten Napoli and Villarreal already and were arguably unlucky to take just a point from their clash against Monaco, which ended 2-2 after a controversial late penalty for their opponents.

Pep Guardiola’s side also bounced back from their Premier League loss to Aston Villa by securing a pair of 3-1 wins over Swansea and Bournemouth last week. The first of which was in the EFL Cup and the latter which saw them retain second spot in the league.

Borussia Dortmund are also on seven points in the Champions League after a series of high-scoring affairs. They opened their campaign with a 4-4 draw with Juventus before beating Athletic Bilbao 4-1 and seeing off Copenhagen 4-2.

These two teams met in both the 2021/22 and 2022/23 editions of the Champions League, with City winning three by a scoreline of 2-1, although their most recent head-to-head was a goalless draw.

City have seen the majority of their injury complaints shaken off, with Rodri featuring from the bench against Bournemouth on Sunday.

Mateo Kovacic now remains their only absentee as he recovers from an ankle injury which is expected to see him miss the next few months.

Guardiola may also be concerned by the fact that if midfielder Bernardo Silva receives another yellow card he will have to serve a suspension.

Erling Haaland was brought off after scoring twice against the Cherries at the weekend and is likely to lead the line once more against his former team.

With a huge game against Liverpool looming at the weekend, Guardiola may choose to be cautious by bringing off his star player early.

Haaland to haunt former club

The Norwegian has been in outrageous goalscoring form this season, scoring 26 in all competitions for club and country after netting a brace against Bournemouth at the weekend to take his league tally to 13.

Guardiola stated that the forward is on the same level as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo following the win, saying: “Have you seen the numbers of that guy? Of course he has. I have said many times, he is incredibly coachable and I am tough with him sometimes.

“He is completely down to earth, he wants to do it and he lives for the goals. Without him, it would be tough to be honest.”

Haaland scored an acrobatic volley that won Champions League Goal of the Season when Dortmund last visited the Etihad in 2022 so his former club will be hoping he does not come back to haunt them once again.
