Manchester City's plans for their first campaign under new boss Enzo Maresca have been dealt a considerable blow, with midfield star Rodri set to undergo back surgery.

Per The Athletic, the 30-year-old, who is fresh off a sublime summer campaign with Spain that saw him help La Roja lift the World Cup trophy for the second time, still has no established timeline for his return to action after the procedure.

Rodri's injury issues for the club have been long-standing, with the midfield maestro missing out on almost all of the 2024/25 season, while starting just 17 of City's Premier League fixtures last term.

The summer purchase of Elliot Anderson will go some way to help City kick on in Rodri's absence, but reported rumblings of his desire to move to Real Madrid amid the existing stalemate surrounding extension discussions throw additional questions into the mix.

City are set to open their 2026/27 Premier League campaign at home against Bournemouth on 23 August, across a campaign where many anticipate Maresca to push the club to challenge league rivals Arsenal at the top of the table.
