Manchester United could reportedly find themselves embroiled in a legal battle to retain Harry Maguire, who is attracting heavy interest from both England and abroad.
Maguire’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season although United have the option of extending his stay by an additional 12 months.
As he enters the final six months of his terms at Old Trafford, the former United captain will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with any foreign outfit from 1 January 2025 onwards.
According to Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic, the Red Devils are “facing a dilemma in the negotiations” for Maguire’s proposed new deal. This is because if he agrees to move away, United’s one-year extension clause may be removed, therefore rendering the club powerless in their bid to keep hold of him.
Whitwell notes, “The matter would become complicated legally if the 31-year-old centre-back wants to push through a free transfer, as he is entitled to next summer as matters stand.”
“Ultimately, should United try to activate Maguire’s plus one after he has agreed with another team then FIFA could step in to resolve. Typically, world football’s governing body favours players in such disputes.”
It’s understood that United and Maguire are in talks over a new contract beyond the extra season.
A few days ago, the England international described negotiations as “really positive.” A report covered by The Peoples Person revealed that Ruben Amorim has been left impressed by Maguire and is eager to keep the central defender.
The Athletic name four clubs that are keen on signing Maguire on a free – Napoli, Fenerbahce, Galatasaray and Leicester City.
Napoli are actively seeking defensive reinforcements and have been encouraged by the success of Scott McTominay, who made the switch from United during the summer. Napoli believe Maguire could deliver a similar level of impact.
Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho tried to sign Maguire when he was in the United dugout and there is now a possibility the pair could work together at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium. Fenerbahce’s league rivals Galatasaray are also keeping tabs on Maguire and his situation.
Leicester gaffer Ruud van Nistelrooy is thought to be an admirer of Maguire and the chance to make a sensational return to the King Power Stadium could carry a special emotional appeal for the defender.
Maguire has made 12 appearances for United across all competitions this season. If he maintains his current trajectory, he could be set for a significant role under Amorim.
