Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has claimed that he would bring Antony back to Old Trafford, if he were Ruben Amorim.

The Dutch legend was CEO of Ajax from 2016-2023 during an incredibly successful time for the club, as they won numerous titles and reached the semi-final of the Champions League.

He was also in charge when Manchester United took Erik ten Hag, Lisandro Martinez and Antony from the Dutch club in the summer of 2022.

Antony’s time in England has been ineffective to say the least, scoring just 12 times in 96 appearances.

Man United’s head coach, Ruben Amorim, decided quite early on in his tenure that Antony was surplus to requirements at the club and gave him permission to go on loan to Real Betis in January.

The Brazilian grabbed the chance with both hands, scoring nine goals, and United hope they can secure a transfer fee this summer for him.

United legend Van der Sar has a different opinion on the matter though and has urged Amorim to consider bringing the Brazil international back to Old Trafford.

Speaking on the sidelines of an EA Sports event, in comments carried by Record, he advised, “maybe Garnacho will leave, so I would say bring Antony back, but I don’t know if that’s realistic.”

He also gave the recommendation that United should try to bring in a “more experienced” striker to help solve their attacking woes.

Van der Sar was generally positive about the club’s future as he claimed that “the two players they signed in the winter break were good, so they should be fine.”

He also insisted that in spite of the club’s 15th position in the league last season, they need to “put their trust in the coach.”

United have reportedly set a transfer fee of £21-25 million for Antony with Betis, Bayer Leverkusen and Juventus all showing interest. Featured image Octavio Passos via Getty Images
