Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has landed a permanent slot on BBC’s Match of the Day football highlights show.
The all-time leading goalscorer for the Red Devils hasn’t had much luck recently in his management career.
After having a rather successful spell at Derby County, he failed to pull up many trees in the United States at DC United.
Rooney did have a couple of opportunities in the Championship with Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle but was dismissed from both positions.
He has also recently been linked to the Macclesfield job but it seems that he has undertaken a significant career change, at least for the time being.
The Sun report that “Rooney has landed an £800,000 two-year deal to be a Match of the Day regular.”
It is claimed that he will be officially revealed this month after impressing as a guest on the show last season.
Rooney will also be covering the World Cup next season in North America on top of the usual Premier League and FA Cup matches.
If he impresses, there is also the possibility of a two year extension in his contract.
A source claimed, “Wayne is a natural broadcaster; he is warm, witty and forensically knowledgeable about all aspects of the game.”
The BBC are also impressed with his “deep love for football and he also gets on well with everyone on both sides of the camera.”
It is also reported that viewers of the show have “really taken to him” and this is evident by social media commentary on his guest appearances.
Rooney has commented in the past that he has not given up on his hopes of continuing his management career, so it will be interesting to see whether he will finally decide to settle in the punditry industry. Featured image Alex Livesey via Getty Images
