Manchester United have “escalated their interest” in AS Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar after identifying the Serbian international as a “primary target” this summer, according to a report.

TEAMtalk reveals the Red Devils have made “significant moves” to explore a deal for Svilar, 25, as the club searches for a new goalkeeper at an affordable price.

The report states, “Manchester United have escalated their interest in Roma’s talented goalkeeper Mile Svilar, with sources indicating that the Premier League giants have made significant moves in the past week to explore the feasibility of a transfer.

“The 25-year-old Belgian shot-stopper has emerged as a prime target for United, who view him as a potential value-for-money signing to bolster their goalkeeping department.”

Roma are described as “aware” of the growing interest in Svilar and believed to have set an asking price in the “region of €25-30m (£21m-£25m)” – a reasonable fee for a talented young goalkeeper.

TEAMtalk reveals the Serbian shot stopper, who was born in Belgium, is “interested” in a move to Old Trafford with only two years remaining on his deal in the Italian capital.

However, there is considerable competition for Svilar with Premier League rivals Manchester City, Chelsea, and Newcastle all “monitoring” the 25-year-old, while there is also interest from Bayern Munich and Monaco.

United would pose a unique challenge for Svilar, however, compared to the other sides in England.

Neither of the existing options in Ruben Amorim’s squad – Andre Onana or Altay Bayindir – have impressed the Portuguese coach since arrived from Sporting CP in November.

Both goalkeepers have committed game-changing errors when picked by Amorim, creating a sense of panic which spreads like a disease through the United defence.

If Svilar was to arrive at Old Trafford, even if the initial plan was to be a back-up in place of Bayindir, with the view towards challenging Onana, he would face little issue taking the United star’s spot given how poorly the Cameroonian international has played this season.

There has never been a clearer path for a number two to become a number one than for the Red Devils this summer.

For a fee as potentially cheap as £21 million, United could secure a significant upgrade in one of the most important areas of the pitch while giving Amorim the “new No. 1 between the sticks” he so desperately wants.
