It might seem that winning every Premier League match in a calendar month, conceding no goals, and allowing fewer shots on target than rivals conceded goals, would make Mikel Arteta the obvious choice for Manager of the Month.

Yet the award for October has gone instead to Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, despite Arsenal setting a new record that you can read more about below.

Three of the four nominated managers, Arteta, Amorim, Unai Emery and Andoni Iraola, went unbeaten through October, but only Arteta’s Arsenal won every match without conceding.

Arsenal’s run included three London derbies while Amorim’s supporters will cite United’s victory over Liverpool, and Emery’s backers can point to Aston Villa victories against Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

If the award had taken all competitions into account, the result would have been beyond question. Arteta’s Arsenal won six out of six in the Premier League, Champions League and League Cup without letting in a single goal.

It was the first time in English top-flight history that a team had played six matches in one month, won them all without conceding a single goal.

Still, at least Arteta now avoids the Manager of the Month curse.
