Manchester United players are reportedly ruing a “missed opportunity” following their dismal start to the 2025/26 Premier League season.

United enduring tough start to the season

United have had a challenging start to the campaign, winning just two of the opening four top-flight fixtures. The Red Devils were also dumped out of the Carabao Cup in the second round by League Two side Grimsby Town.

The latest disappointing result, a 3-0 hammering at the hands of cross-town rivals Manchester City, has sparked fresh speculation over Ruben Amorim’s future.

United proved no match as City strolled to victory and collected all three points at the Etihad.

Amorim, who has won just eight of the 31 Premier League games he has taken charge of, stressed that he will not compromise on his approach despite growing calls for him to do so.

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe flew into Carrington on Thursday, where he held crunch talks with Amorim over the team’s dire form.

At the moment, Amorim retains the support of the hierarchy but their hands could be tied if results don’t improve.

Now, the Manchester Evening News reports that United players are frustrated at failing to build on the momentum and optimism generated in pre-season.

United players ruing missed opportunity

Samuel Luckhurst claims, “Manchester United players are concerned by how swiftly the mood has changed at the club following two defeats from their opening four Premier League fixtures.”

“Dressing room sources say the mood after the derby has been particularly sombre, with United players ruing a ‘missed opportunity’ against a City side that had lost their previous two games against Tottenham and Brighton.”

It’s understood that the squad was “upbeat” about their prospects but the mood has been deflated. Recently, it emerged that INEOS are furious with the first-team squad after leaks of players’ discontent with Amorim.

United are back in action on Saturday when they host Chelsea.
