Manchester United kick off their pre-season friendly this evening in Finland, taking on Championship side Wrexham AFC at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium.

With the World Cup in full swing and many of United’s key players heavily involved, the squad inevitably features some major omissions as the Red Devils prepare to face the Red Dragons.

Matchday squad named

Yesterday, the 20-time English champions confirmed a 25-man travelling party, and today the official matchday squad has been released:

Goalkeepers: Tom Heaton, Dermot Mee, Radek Vitek

Defenders: Harry Amass, Dan Armer, Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, Ayden Heaven, Jayden Kamason, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Leny Yoro

Midfielders: Toby Collyer, Jacob Devaney, Jack Fletcher, Tyler Fletcher, Dan Gore, Mason Mount, Andrey Santos, Jim Thwaites

Forwards: Shea Lacey, Bryan Mbeumo, Chido Obi, Ethan Wheatley, Ethan Williams, Joshua Zirkzee

From this list, there is plenty to unpack. Andrey Santos looks set to make his debut, while Mason Mount may continue in the central midfield role he adopted at the end of last season, a position in which he is widely tipped to play next season.

Patrick Dorgu position hint

Beyond Santos and Mount, another intriguing detail lies in Patrick Dorgu’s classification.

The 21-year-old has impressed as a left winger, with his camp even suggesting he could excel on the right.

However, in this announcement, Dorgu is listed as a defender. That designation strongly hints that the club still view him in a defensive capacity.

If that is the case, the implications for United’s transfer plans are significant. It could mean the pursuit of Lewis Hall is quietly being abandoned.

This scenario may also explain Michael Carrick’s eagerness to see Marcus Rashford return swiftly, with hopes that the Mancunian can contest the left wing alongside Cunha.
