Manchester United defender Rhys Bennett is reportedly undergoing closer medical examinations after sustaining an injury while on loan at Fleetwood Town.

Bennett signed for Fleetwood in August in search of regular first-team minutes.

His time at Fleetwood has so far proven to be a success, having made 17 appearances. 11 of these have come as starts.

The Carrington academy graduate has managed one assist in that period.

He was named in the starting XI on Saturday as Fleetwood came up against Carlisle United at Highbury Stadium.

Pete Wild included him in a back-four defensive set-up also consisting of James Bolton, Ryan Broom and Finley Potter. However, Bennett was only on the pitch for 73 minutes before he was forced to come off with an injury.

According to Manchester Evening News, “Manchester United defender Rhys Bennett is being assessed after picking up an injury on loan at Fleetwood Town.”

“The Manchester Evening News understands Bennett is waiting for a scan on the issue, but the injury doesn’t seem to be serious at this stage and he is still taking part in light training.

Bennett was substituted moments after Ronan Coughlan brought Fleetwood level, having gone a goal down courtesy of a Cedwyn Scott opener in the 19th minute.

However, Carlisle retook their lead late on courtesy of Samuel Lavelle.

The meeting saw Bennett come up against United academy teammate Joe Hugill, who led the line for Carlisle. Hugill just joined the Cumbrians on loan after being recalled from Wigan Athletic.

If Bennett is deemed fit enough to play on Tuesday against Walsall, he will be tasked with stopping another familiar face – Ethan Wheatley, who also recently left on loan.
