Manchester City have announced the signing of England defender Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace on a five-and-a-half-year contract until 2031.

He is the club’s second acquisition of the winter transfer window following the £64 million signing of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth.

City have signed Guehi for an initial £20m fee after Palace opted to part ways with him six months from the end of his contract.

“I am really happy and incredibly proud to be a Manchester City player,” Guehi told the club’s official website. “This move feels like the culmination of all the hard work I have put into my career.

“I am now at the best club in England and part of an unbelievable squad of players. It feels good to be able to say that.”

Guehi was close to signing for Liverpool last summer, but Palace’s failure to secure a replacement resulted in them pulling the plug on the deal.

Given Man City’s current injury crisis at the back, they will need Guehi to hit the ground running if they are to usurp Arsenal in the title race.

They are seven points adrift of the league leaders. With away matches against Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool on the horizon, City will need to be at their best.

The immediate focus is on Tuesday’s trip to Norway for the challenge of Bodo/Glimt as City aim to potentially confirm their place in the top eight of the Champions League group phase.
