Manchester City head coach Andrée Jeglertz was thrilled with how his side performed on the big stage after they recorded a 3-0 derby victory over Manchester United.

Rebecca Knaak, Khadija Shaw and Lauren Hemp got the goals as The Cityzens were victorious at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

When speaking to the media after the match, Jeglertz was full of praise for his players given how they handled the big occasion.

“I think it’s a fantastic game in many ways,” Jeglertz said. “Just to be in the stadium with the fans, of course, and also the way we handled the event by performing this way.

“Of course, I’m very happy, especially for the players, because there’s always something special playing a derby and also after last year’s game.
There was something there that was also probably making the result even more important.”

Forward Hemp returned to the starting line-up after injury and Jeglertz hailed the player’s all-round contribution to the game.

He said “Every time she has the ball, she has a great left foot, of course, everybody knows that, but also her ability to always engage the full-back, always trying to [ask herself] ‘Can I play forward?’, ‘Can I make another cross?’,
‘Should I challenge one against one?’ She’s giving us a lot of that, but also in this case, there was a little bit more demand on her in the defending part. We put a little bit more demand on her, but we also need to take care of her.”

Manchester City ended the day at the top of the Barclays Women’s Super League table and Jeglertz shared his thoughts on being in pole position.

He said “It’s fantastic to be on top of the league, there’s no doubt about that and that is going to give the team a good confidence, definitely. We’re doing a lot of good things, but at the same time, we know it’s a long league [season], so no matter what the positioning in November, if you can’t keep it until May, it doesn’t mean anything. I think it’s nice to be where we are, but we are also looking towards next weekend against Nottingham Forest.”

Manchester City are now on a 10-game unbeaten run in all competitions and Jeglertz credits that to the belief in and around the team.

He said “I think that the belief is strong. The confidence in the group becomes stronger all of the time, but the team is also [getting stronger] from every game we win.

“In the meetings afterwards, it’s always [about] ‘we could have done this better’.
They’re always striving to do things better all of the time and I think that’s the most important thing in this; that we have high goals and high ambitions with the group, but the group are always trying to become a little bit better from each game.

“Even when we beat Everton last week, we spent time afterwards looking at how can we do the defending better, how we solve these things rather than just going through the game.
I think that will still be the most important thing for me that we’re still doing things better.

“Of course, after this game, we need to enjoy it, but at the same, the most important thing for us is to have a good result in the end.”

Manchester City’s next fixture is against Nottingham Forest in the Subway Women’s League Cup at The City Ground next weekend.
