Etihad Stadium fans have named who Manchester City should sign at right-back role in Pep Guardiola’s squad this summer after links with Tino Livramento were dismissed.
City’s recruitment strategy has once again come under the spotlight as the club continues to explore options at right-back following the departure of Kyle Walker to Burnley earlier this summer.
With Walker’s exit leaving a leadership void on the right side of defence, Manchester City are now actively considering potential long-term successors to slot into Pep Guardiola’s evolving system.
Initial investigations had led officials at the Etihad Stadium toward Tino Livramento at Newcastle United, with the 22-year-old England international widely admired for his versatility and athleticism.
However, City have now pulled back from the pursuit, with credible reporting indicating no bid will be submitted this summer despite brief internal interest. That decision coincides with Newcastle’s own plans to offer Livramento a lucrative new long-term contract.
As a result, attention has now turned to the role of Hugo Viana, Manchester City’s newly-installed director of football, and his early influence over first-team recruitment priorities.
The right-back position has emerged as a key talking point heading into the final weeks of the transfer market, with Viana tasked with shaping the short and long-term direction of City’s squad rebuild ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
With Manchester City now no longer expected to lodge a bid for their seemingly first-choice target for the right-back role in Tino Livramento, City Xtra took to social media to put the question to supporters – who should the club target next?
With hundreds of responses, there were several names put forward both within the Premier League, over in France, Spain, and Italy, with a range of transfer fees commanded by all of the players mentioned.
Among the most popular replies were a blend of realistic targets and more ambitious ideas, many of whom have already been loosely linked with moves elsewhere this summer:
Denzel Dumfries (Inter Milan) – A frequent feature in City-related speculation, admired for his direct running and UEFA Champions League pedigree. Had a €25 million release clause, with a mandatory term of being paid in one instalment, but valid until mid-July.
Ola Aina (Nottingham Forest) – Perhaps a cheaper, Premier League-proven alternative with positional versatility and strong one-on-one defending. Only recently penned a new contract at the City Ground until the summer of 2028.
Jules Koundé (FC Barcelona) – Already the subject of inquiries from Manchester City, though Barcelona hope to tie him down to a new deal. Deemed by the La Liga club to be untouchable in the transfer market.
Diogo Dalot (Manchester United) – A wildcard suggestion, but some fans admire his development and physical profile. There is surely no chance of a cross-town switch for the Portugal international.
Djed Spence (Tottenham Hotspur) – Once highly rated, and still viewed by some as an untapped talent with raw potential.
Arnau Martínez (Girona) – Strong City Football Group links make this a logistically easy option, though interest from other La Liga clubs could complicate matters.
Vanderson (AS Monaco) – A right-back on the radar of several top European sides, particularly praised for his attacking instincts.
Martim Fernandes (FC Porto) – A name believed to be on Manchester City’s long-term scouting radar, with a rising profile in Portugal. Unknown at this stage whether he is considered ready for a step up or immediate investment by Etihad officials.
Daniel Muñoz (Crystal Palace) – Consistent and technically sound, Muñoz was one of Palace’s standout performers last season. Tentatively linked with Manchester City interest earlier this year by Colombian media.
With Hugo Viana now under pressure to deliver solutions before Manchester City’s Premier League campaign kicks off, these suggestions may offer insight into the qualities fans want to see brought into the fold — athleticism, composure, and readiness to contribute defensively and offensively.
