During the latter stages of Manchester City’s FIFA Club World Cup opening Group G victory against Wydad AC, Rico Lewis was sent off for a dangerous tackle. The red card shown to Lewis did appear to be harsh. Lewis’s original challenge on Wydad AC player Samuel Obeng did take the ball. But his follow-through caught Obeng in the face.

Lewis was subsequently suspended for a dangerous tackle. He missed Manchester City’s win over Al Ain. It was thought that Lewis would only miss City’s match against Al Ain at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. But that isn’t the case, as Lewis has now been suspended for a further two FIFA Club World Cup matches.

Rico Lewis will miss Manchester City’s clash with Juventus and their Round of 16 tie.

Paul Hirst of The Times has reported via X that Rico Lewis has been suspended for two more matches. Hirst reports that FIFA’s disciplinary committee has deemed that Lewis’s challenge on Obeng constituted serious foul play. The England international is now suspended for Manchester City’s next two FIFA Club World Cup matches. The challenge that Rico Lewis was sent off for against Wydad AC can be seen below.

Manchester City will have to make do without Lewis.

Manchester City will now have to take on Juventus and play their Round of 16 tie of the FIFA Club World Cup without Rico Lewis. His suspension is a blow for Pep Guardiola’s side. Lewis did look set to have a key role at right-back to play for Manchester City at the tournament. Unfortunately, he will now have to hope his team makes the quarter-final stage of the competition if he is to play another match at the tournament.

Today’s news that Rico Lewis’ suspension will be extended is a blow for Manchester City. The young full-back will be missed by Pep Guardiola’s side. But it should give an opportunity for Matheus Nunes or Abdukodir Khusanov to impress at right-back in Lewis’s absence.
