The Telegraph report that Manchester United have banned a supporter for three years over a homophobic social media post about Chelsea.

The fan is understood to have used the derogatory “rent boys” term against the West London club in recent weeks.

After the post was reported to Manchester United, the club issued him a three-year suspension for breaching ground regulations.

The “rent boy” slur has been classed as hate-crime language by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Free speech?

“Whatever happened to free speech,” the fan wrote on X as he posted a screengrab of the notice of his banning by United.

The email he shared said:

“It has recently come to our attention that you may have breached our official terms and conditions.

“Specifically, we understand that you have used homophobic written communication or online towards Chelsea and their supporters. This offence contravenes ground regulations/is an offence in the club’s official sanctions document. For a first offence, this carries a three-year suspension (home and away)…We have therefore taken the initial precaution of applying a three-year suspension to your account. You will not be able to attend or purchase tickets for any games during this time.”
