Manchester United’s pursuit of Adam Wharton has entered a decisive phase, with the Crystal Palace midfielder emerging as a leading target ahead of next summer. His progress over the past two seasons has elevated him into one of England’s most in-demand young footballers, and United view him as a cornerstone signing for their evolving project.
Yet confidence at Old Trafford comes with a significant caveat: Wharton will only consider a move if Man Utd secure European football.

United’s admiration for Wharton is no surprise. At just 21, he has become a standout performer for Crystal Palace, combining press-resistant control with progressive passing and a maturity beyond his years. His performances have resonated strongly with the recruitment team and with Ruben Amorim, who sees the midfielder as an ideal fit for his possession-led system.
However, Wharton’s own ambitions shape the situation just as clearly. The midfielder is understood to favour a move back to the north west, but only if it aligns with his desire to play regularly on the European stage. United’s absence from continental competition this season has not gone unnoticed, and their current mid-table position leaves the outcome far from guaranteed.
His representatives are said to be open to discussions, yet they remain firm: European qualification is essential before any agreement progresses.
Amorim’s rebuild at Old Trafford is designed around technical security and tactical structure, making Wharton a natural target. A fee in the region of £70 million has been floated, and United are confident they can meet Palace’s valuation.
Their broader midfield strategy includes monitoring Elliot Anderson and Conor Gallagher, but Wharton remains the preferred option. United sources have played down links with Wolves’ Joao Gomes, with the Midlands side unwilling to consider a January sale as they battle to stay in the Premier League.
This places the club’s focus squarely on long-term planning, with Wharton positioned as a priority for the summer window.
United’s visit to face Crystal Palace this Sunday adds an intriguing layer to the developing story. Wharton has been central to Palace’s stability under Oliver Glasner, and his influence continues to expand with every match.
For United, the fixture is not only a test of momentum but a reminder of the calibre of player they must attract to accelerate their resurgence. Securing European football is no longer simply a benchmark of progress; in this case, it may directly determine whether one of England’s most promising talents is willing to join the project.
As the season develops, Wharton’s trajectory — and United’s ability to align with his ambitions — will shape one of the defining transfer narratives of next summer.
