Ruben Amorim’s worst fears have been realised with defender set to be out for a significant period of time
Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has suffered an injury to his cruciate ligament, the club have confirmed.
Martinez sustained the serious injury last weekend during Man United's 2-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
The defender went to ground following an innocuous challenge involving Palace winger Ismaila Sarr and was taken off the pitch on a stretcher following a lengthy stoppage.
Martinez has since undergone scans and the Red Devils confirmed on Thursday morning that he has done damage to his cruciate ligament.
Though the Argentine will see a specialist to determine the appropriate course of treatment.
A statement from Man Utd read: “Manchester United can confirm that Lisandro Martinez suffered an injury to his cruciate ligament in Sunday’s game against Crystal Palace.
"Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the appropriate course of treatment and the timescale for his rehabilitation.
"Everyone at Manchester United wishes Lisandro Martinez strength for a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way."

The news of Martinez's injury is a hammer blow to Man Utd as they are short of natural left-sided central defensive options and Ruben Amorim’s worst fears have been realised.
"We are going to see in the next days but I think it is a serious situation,” Amorim told reporters after the Palace game. “He is not only a great player but a strong character in the dressing room.
“He felt it and when you are a player, you know when it is something serious.
“We are here to help him in this difficult moment like he has helped us."
