Manchester United could do with more reinforcements in left-sided centre-back position given Lisandro Martinez is not expected back before next year.
Leny Yoro has impressed in the Argentine’s absence but he remains injury prone while Ayden Heaven remains raw and needs to be carefully managed given his recent injury scare.
Both Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans are expected to make way which is why the Red Devils have been linked with a plethora of centre-backs including Yusuf Akcicek of Fenerbahce.
The 19-year-old has been compared with former United star Raphael Varane by Jose Mourinho, which just goes to show how highly-rated he is.
The 20-time English league champions have already scouted him and as revealed by Bild, the Old Trafford side have been joined in the race for the Turkish wonderkid by Bayern Munich.
But Fener will not allow suitors to win the race that easily. The report reveals that the Turkish giants are looking to extend Akcicek’s deal, currently valid until 2028, by another two years to ward off interested parties.
The report also makes it clear that should a mega offer arrive, they will not stand in the defender’s way. He is currently valued at €5.5 million as per Transfermarkt but is expected to cost way more.
Interestingly, the Bundesliga giants are not considering an approach this year, which could allow United a free run at the Turkish star this summer.
“Yusuf Akcicek (19) has a big fan in star coach José Mourinho. But not only the Portuguese knows what a gem he has in his team at the Turkish top club Fenerbahce, FC Bayern has also long since taken notice of the defender.
“The German record champions have already sent scouts to Turkey to take a closer look at the youngster. SPORT BILD can confirm this. But: The topic isn’t hot right now. While Bayern have their eye on the Fenerbahce star, he plays no role in their transfer plans for next summer.
“Fenerbahce also doesn’t want to let its talent go. The 19-year-old’s contract is to be extended as soon as possible. It currently runs until 2028, but is set to be extended to 2030
“However, should a mega offer for Akcicek arrive, the bosses would be willing to talk at any time. There’s considerable interest in the Fenerbahce youngster. In addition to Bayern, top clubs Manchester United, SSC Napoli, Spanish giants Atlético Madrid, and RB Leipzig are said to have their eye on him.”
There is also Jarrad Branthwaite on United’s radar, but Amorim has more pressing needs up top. INEOS will likely have to prioritise in the summer window.
