Manchester United identify key left-back target; Real Madrid focus is elsewhere

Manchester United have an eye on Girona left-back Miguel Gutierrez.

Erik ten Hag started the 2024/25 campaign without a recognised left-back due to injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

The Dutchman has called upon Diogo Dalot more often than not to fulfil the role, on his least favoured side, but the Portuguese full-back has done a decent job of that.

It still means that we need to consider signing a new left-back in 2025 – in January or by waiting until the summer.

Gutierrez has emerged as one of the standout left-backs in La Liga since leaving Real Madrid.

Football Transfers understands United’s chances of landing Gutierrez have significantly increased, with INEOS making him a key target as they look to bolster their options at left-back.

The 23-year-old left Real Madrid for regular football and has since become a star in a thriving Girona side.

Sources claim Gutierrez is now a top target for United.

United are undecided about making a move in January or holding off until the summer.

The jury is out on whether United can continue to trust Shaw as the primary left-back. There is no denying that he is among the best in the world when fit, but that’s a rare occurrence these days.

Meanwhile, most United fans forget Malacia existed.

Madrid are understood to be focusing on Alphonso Davies at Bayern Munich, which could leave the door wide open for United to sign Gutierrez.
