Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire picked up issues during defeat of Crystal Palace

Michael Carrick is still unsure whether Luke Shaw or Harry Maguire will be available as Manchester United face Newcastle on Wednesday.

Shaw has started every Premier League match for United so far this season and did the same as Crystal Palace visited Old Trafford on Sunday, but he did not last half an hour.

He received treatment following a coming together with Daniel Munoz and was replaced by Noussair Mazraoui.

Maguire, meanwhile, was also not thought to be at full fitness in the Palace match despite playing nearly the full duration.

Speaking at full-time, Carrick could not offer a concrete update on the player’s condition, simply saying he was “not feeling too well,” and delivered another vague update in his pre-match press conference.

Asked whether the pair would be available, he said: "We’re hoping so, we’re working towards it. We’ve still got a bit of time to the game so we’ll see how they feel.”

He confirmed, however, that neither was injured - simply unwell: “It wasn’t injury, both weren’t feeling too good.”

Lisandro Martinez has been ruled out of the trip to the north-east, though.

Asked if he had a positive update on the Argentine, Carrick explained: “Not particularly, really, no. He won’t be with us. He’s not quite ready for that.”

The United boss did not provide any update on the condition of Mason Mount, Matthijs de Ligt or Patrick Dorgu.

Mount is thought to be closing in on comebacks from a knock, but it remains to be seen whether they will be involved in Newcastle. De Ligt and Dorgu, meanwhile, are facing longer spells out with back and hamstring problems, respectively.

Despite the mounting injuries, Carrick is confident his team will not run out of steam in the run-in as they look to secure a return to the Champions League.

"I think coming in at the start, it was one game at a time again. You've got to perform, and the boys have got to be in a good frame of mind to be able to put performances together. I think the only way to do it and give yourself the best chance is to stay in the moment, and it's for everybody else to get involved in the discussions.

"I didn’t get too far ahead in terms of what was possible at that stage. We had to get to work quickly and put things into practice, give the players the right balance to go into a game.”
