Manchester United are keeping a close eye on Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes ahead of the summer transfer window.
Gomes is part of a long shortlist of options to energise the club’s midfield at Old Trafford, with an exit from Wolves almost certain as the club head towards an inevitable relegation.
Though the Red Devils have higher priorities, Sky Sports are reporting that Gomes is being tracked. The Brazilian leads the Premier League for tackles won this season and is viewed as a proven ‘hard-working option who has performed well in difficult circumstances’.
Gomes represents a more affordable option than leading targets including Elliot Anderson, of Nottingham Forest, and Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali.
Competition is expected for the 25-year-old, who has won 10 caps for Brazil, from across Europe. However, he recently spoke of his fondness for the Premier League.
“I always dreamt about playing in the Premier League and when I came here, it went beyond my expectations. It was truly something amazing and magical,” he told the Wolves website.
“I don’t think it’s easy for anyone to move to the Premier League, even more so when you’re coming from a league that’s a bit quieter, and then you come here and things are much quicker, they’re much more attacking, but you also have to have a good defence.
“Everyone needs a certain period to adapt and everyone needs a period of adjustment to the Premier League, so I think that’s extremely normal.”
