Amorim made a dismal start to his career at Old Trafford, finishing 15th in the Premier League before losing to Tottenham in the Europa League final, and has been slow off the mark this season, too, taking just ten points from seven matches.

He reportedly retains the support of the United board, though, despite growing frustration among fans. Ratcliffe told The Times during the international break that he planned to give Amorim as much as three years to hone his project.

Amorim has now responded to the show of support, telling Sky Sports: “He (Ratcliffe) is always saying that he wants me for many years, but he knows and I know how football is.

“One game can change everything. It is always positive to hear your boss giving you that confidence, especially for our supporters.”

He continued, confirming United are focused on their long-term project rather than short-term results.

Asked what success looked like for United this season, Amorim said: “You can say winning titles, but last season we were near to a title, so you need to balance things.

“Sometimes you win titles, like Tottenham, and they go a different direction with a new manager, so I think we need to be a bigger team.

“We need to win in every competition. Every fan should expect the team to perform today, tomorrow.

“I think that is what (Ratcliffe) wants to see. A team that could fight for titles, win titles, and that is really consistent in the way that we play.”

Man United are not competing in Europe this season for the first time since 2014-15, another ill Amorim is hoping to remedy this campaign, but he admitted results may not be immediate.

“We want to go to Europe,” he declared. “We need to return to Europe.

“This club’s success is to win the Premier League. We have to be honest with our fans that we are not in that moment.

“We need to be really clear on that, so I am not going to call success going to Europe, or finishing in the [top] eight or six, or whatever. That is not success.

“We need to give steps to success. Success for this club is to win the Premier League, nothing less.
