During the January transfer window, Roma presented Zirkzee with a four-year contract offer worth €3 million net per year plus bonuses to prise him away from Old Trafford.
However, United refused to sanction the exit. Roma director of football Frederic Massara conceded that United had said ‘no quite clearly’, leaving them with no option but to bide their time.
That time has now arrived. Roma are seeking to add another striker to their squad, despite signing Donyell Malen from Aston Villa.
Zirkzee’s ability to drop deep, link play, and bring others into the game made him a standout performer at Bologna, and Roma view him as an ideal addition.
United value Zirkzee at around £30.5 million – a figure that represents a reasonable return on an investment that has not worked out at Old Trafford.
The 24-year-old has never established himself since arriving from Bologna in 2024, and his recent display against Sunderland was further proof that his time in Manchester has not gone as planned.
Roma are on course to secure Europa League football for next season, but they are only behind Juventus on goal difference, leaving Champions League qualification well within their sights.
