Manchester United target Marcos Alonso to join Celta Vigo | OneFootball

Manchester United free agent target Marcos Alonso has an agreement to join Celta Vigo.

The left back played for Premier League rivals Chelsea during six seasons, playing 212 times and scoring 29 goals.

The 33 year old had represented FC Barcelona in the last two seasons, scoring against United in a 2-2 draw in the Europa League at the Camp Nou in 2023.

Alonso had been linked to a move to Old Trafford last season before the Red Devils eventually settled on bringing in Sergio Reguilon on loan due to injuries to regular left backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

This season also sees United without a starting left back as of now due to injuries and earlier this month, Alonso was once again linked to a move to United as he is now a free agent.

Sevilla were also said to be interested in him but according to Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano, it is Celta Vigo that have won the race for his signature.

Romano reports that “Marcos Alonso to Celta Vigo, here we go! Agreement in place to join the club on free transfer, contract approved.”

Nonetheless, the deal is not quite done as he also states that the deal “will now depend on Financial Fair Play space to proceed with formal steps for Celta to sign former Barça LB.”

Interestingly, Romano contradicts earlier reports from different outlets and claims that Manchester United were “never an option despite links.”

This is corroborated by news that despite having a very busy summer to date, the club has not been looking for left backs despite the injury situation.

It is thought that Shaw may be able to return soon after the international break and Malacia will be available for selection in October.

What’s more, new signing Noussair Mazraoui can cover the left back position, despite starting the season in his favoured right back spot.
