Sam Johnstone could be handed a surprise route out of Wolves, with Manchester United said to be considering a move for their former academy goalkeeper as cover for No.1 Senne Lammens. The 33-year-old is expected to depart this summer after Wolves’ relegation to the Championship prompted a goalkeeping shake-up at Molineux.
Gazzetta dello Sport suggests Juventus are monitoring Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez, although no movement is expected until after the World Cup.
Johnstone came through United’s academy, took loans at Walsall and Villa, then joined West Bromwich Albion in 2018 for an initial £6.5 million. He made 167 appearances in four years with the Baggies, spent two seasons at Crystal Palace, then signed for Wolves in 2024.
Injuries have limited his impact at Molineux, where he has played just 27 times across two seasons and missed the closing months with a shoulder problem.
Martinez was close to leaving Villa last summer, but a much-discussed switch to Manchester United did not materialise. The 33-year-old then played a major part in Unai Emery’s side winning the Europa League and clinching a top-four Premier League finish, and while Villa are not actively selling, a strong offer could prompt a rethink, the report said. The Argentina goalkeeper is aiming to help his country defend their title at the World Cup before any decisions are made.
