Manchester United and Fiorentina go head-to-head in their final pre-season friendly at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Both sides will be looking to wrap up their summer preparations in style as they gear up for the new domestic seasons, with United set to face Arsenal in their Premier League opener and Fiorentina beginning their Serie A campaign against Cagliari.
Manchester United could hand debuts to new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo on home soil after both impressed during the US tour. The pair are expected to feature prominently as Ruben Amorim continues to integrate his summer acquisitions. Benjamin Sesko is set to be presented to the crowd following his move from RB Leipzig.
Andre Onana and Joshua Zirkzee remain doubtful as they recover from minor injuries suffered during the American tour. Lisandro Martinez continues his recovery from a knee injury sustained in February and won’t be involved. Captain Bruno Fernandes is expected to start after being voted the star performer of the US tour by supporters.
Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is set for an emotional return to Old Trafford for the first time since his departure in 2023. The Spaniard, who made 415 Premier League appearances for United, will receive a special ceremony from his former club.
New manager Stefano Pioli has bolstered his squad with eight summer signings, including veteran striker Edin Dzeko from Fenerbahce and defensive reinforcement Mattia Viti. Moise Kean will lead the attacking line after his impressive 19-goal Serie A campaign last season.
Amorim’s side concluded their US tour unbeaten, winning the Premier League Summer Series. The Red Devils scored eight goals in their three matches, showing marked improvement in their attacking play under the Portuguese manager. Their most recent outing was a 2-2 draw with Everton.
The Viola finished sixth in Serie A last season, securing UEFA Conference League qualification. Under Pioli, they’ve had a mixed pre-season, winning twice in four friendlies. Their most recent match was a goalless stalemate against Nottingham Forest.
Manchester United 3-1 Fiorentina, Champions League, 2000
The two teams have met in competitive action just three times. Their most recent encounter came in the 1999/2000 Champions League, as holders Manchester United eased past their Italian opponents at Old Trafford.
Gabriel Batistuta’s brilliant strike opened the scoring for Fiorentina, but goals from Andy Cole, Roy Keane, and Dwight Yorke turned the game around for the hosts. United had lost the opening fixture of the now-defunct second group stage to Fiorentina in Florence but recovered to reach the quarter-finals.
