Manchester United travel to Stamford Bridge tonight looking to protect their cushion in the Champions League race.

The Red Devils currently sit third in the Premier League table with 55 points. However, a shock 2–1 home defeat to Leeds United on Monday has slowed their momentum. Michael Carrick’s side has now lost two of their last four league matches. They are desperate to avoid back-to-back defeats for the first time this season.

United have struggled for defensive consistency on the road for a prolonged period. They have managed just one clean sheet in their last 21 away league fixtures. Notably, matches between these two sides have rarely been low-scoring affairs recently. Both teams have found the net in eight of the last nine head-to-head meetings. Carrick will demand an improved defensive showing to secure a vital result.

The visitors face a major selection headache at the heart of their defence. Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez are both ruled out through suspension tonight. Teenage defender Ayden Heaven is expected to be drafted into the starting lineup. Carrick expressed full confidence in the England Under-20 international during his pre-match press conference. Heaven is considered well ahead of schedule in his development at Old Trafford. He is likely to partner Leny Yoro in a very young central defensive pairing. Furthermore, Luke Shaw will provide the necessary experience at left-back.
