Michael Carrick has emerged as a leading contender to take permanent charge at Manchester United, with the club yet to approach any alternative candidates in a significant vote of confidence for the interim head coach, according to reports from Sky Sports.
Since replacing Ruben Amorim in January, Carrick has overseen a remarkable upturn in form, guiding United to 23 points from a possible 30 and lifting them to the top of the Premier League form table. The resurgence has strengthened his case at a time when the club’s hierarchy are deliberately resisting any rush to appoint a long-term successor.
With qualification for the UEFA Champions League increasingly likely, Carrick’s position has only been enhanced. United’s decision-makers are understood to be adopting a cautious, evidence-based approach, mindful of past precedents when interim success has not translated into sustained progress.
High-profile alternatives such as Thomas Tuchel and Carlo Ancelotti now appear less attainable following their respective international commitments, further narrowing the field.
For now, United’s leadership, including chief executive Omar Berrada, are content to allow events to unfold.
