Vasco beat Fluminense 3-2 at the Maracanã on Thursday, another late turnaround in a derby that has produced several in recent years. According to Globo.com, this latest comeback sits among a string of modern classics. Renato Gaúcho's side were behind until the 42nd minute of the second half.
Fluminense scored inside the first minute and struck again after the break. Substitutes Puma and Rojas shifted the game, Nuno Moreira reduced the arrears, Spinelli levelled on 42 minutes of the second half, then Thiago Mendes headed a stoppage-time winner.
The 'time da virada' chant dates back to a 1988 win over Fluminense at the Maracanã.
In the 2025 Copa do Brasil semi-final first leg, Fluminense led through Kevin Serna before Rayan equalised. Vegetti sealed a 2-1 win with the final action at 48 minutes of the second half, a result that proved decisive in reaching the final.
In 2019 at São Januário, Pedro put Fluminense ahead. After Digão was sent off, Leandro Castán levelled from a set piece, Frazan also saw red, and Bruno César won it with a free-kick.
The 2018 Carioca semi-final finished 3-2 to Vasco after Giovanni Augusto opened the scoring. Pedro levelled before the interval, Sornoza made it 2-1, Paulinho equalised, and Fabrício, under scrutiny from fans, found a stoppage-time winner.
In 2017 at São Januário, Luís Fabiano put Vasco in front before Henrique Dourado converted two penalties to turn it around. Manga Escobar equalised, then created the winner for Nenê in stoppage time, with Philippe Coutinho watching from the stands.
