AS Roma midfielder Manu Kone is emerging as Manchester United’s preferred target for a defensive-minded role.

Kone, 25, was one of France’s most promising players at the World Cup, impressing with his all-round playing style. The 6’1″ midfield dynamo showed both composure with the ball and dominance out of possession between defence and midfield.

The Frenchman made 37 appearances for Roma last term and featured five times for Les Bleus in North America. He has been described as “enormously underrated” by European football expert Andy Brassell.

Manchester United leading race to sign Manu Kone

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Manchester United are in “pole position” to sign Manu Kone from AS Roma this summer.

It is claimed the Colombes native is preparing for a holiday after France’s exit, but he will not be able to switch off his mobile because, in the last few hours, interest from the Premier League has intensified.

“So much so that the balance is now tipped toward a sale, which would generate a significant capital gain for the Giallorossi and settle the dispute with UEFA once and for all, as Gasperini himself recently admitted,” the report states.

It is suggested Kone could bring in around €55 million for the Serie A side, having been tied to the club until 2029.

Manu Kone keen to move to the Premier League

The Italian publication believes that United are his strongest suitors. They are also thought to be interested in Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott.

It is insisted that United’s interest in Kone is very real, and so is the France international’s desire to test himself in the Premier League.

The Red Devils are understood to be the favourites at the moment, but La Gazzetta dello Sport warn that an eye should be kept on Chelsea as well.

Earlier today, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Kone turned down Atletico Madrid in favour of a move to England.
